Mary was born about 1832.  Mary's father was John Thorne and her mother was Sarah Greenslade.  Her maternal grandfather was William Greenslade and her maternal grandmother is Mary.  She had four brothers and seven sisters, named Richard, John, Jacob, William, Elizabeth, Sarah, Elizabeth, Jane, Charlot, Eliza and Maria.  She was the fourth oldest of the twelve children.
