Jane was born about 1840 in Withypool, Somerset.1   Jane's father was John Thorne and her mother was Sarah Greenslade.  Her maternal grandfather was William Greenslade and her maternal grandmother is Mary.  She had four brothers and seven sisters, named Richard, John, Jacob, William, Elizabeth, Mary, Sarah, Elizabeth, Charlot, Eliza and Maria.  She was the eighth oldest of the twelve children.
