Jacob was born about 1838 in Withypool, Somerset.1   Jacob's father was John Thorne and his mother was Sarah Greenslade.  His maternal grandfather was William Greenslade and his maternal grandmother is Mary.  He had three brothers and eight sisters, named Richard, John, William, Elizabeth, Mary, Sarah, Elizabeth, Jane, Charlot, Eliza and Maria.  He was the seventh oldest of the twelve children.
