Eliza was born about 1846 in Withypool, Somerset.1   Eliza's father was John Thorne and her mother was Sarah Greenslade.  Her maternal grandfather was William Greenslade and her maternal grandmother is Mary.  She had four brothers and seven sisters, named Richard, John, Jacob, William, Elizabeth, Mary, Sarah, Elizabeth, Jane, Charlot and Maria.  She was the eleventh oldest of the twelve children.
