Laura was born about August 1882 in Swansea, Glamorgan, Wales.¹

Laura's father was John Smaldon and her mother was Anne Thomas. Her paternal grandparents were Robert Smaldon and Elizabeth Challacombe. She had a brother and three sisters, named John, Bertha, Annie and Elizabeth. She was the fourth oldest of the five children.
