James was born about July 1806 in Cutcombe, Somerset, England and his baptism took place on July 10th, 1806 in St John the Evangelist, Cutcombe, Somerset.1 2   James' father was HUGH POOLE and his mother was Mary HOOPER.  His maternal grandfather is JOHN HOOPER and his maternal grandmother was MARY SULLEY.  He had five brothers and four sisters, named John, Hugh, William, Thomas, Hugh, Mary, Sarah, JANE and Elizabeth.  He was the oldest of the ten children.
