George was born on June 29th, 1840 in Molland, Devon.1   George's father was William S. Gibbs and his mother was Elizabeth (Betsey) T. May.  His paternal grandparents are William Gibbs and <Unknown>; his maternal grandparents were William May and Micah May.  He had two brothers named William and John.  He was the second oldest of the three children.
