James was born in 1828 in Nettlecombe, Somerset and his baptism took place there on August 24th, 1828.1 2   James' father was Henry Criddle and his mother was Elizabeth Burrage.  His maternal grandfather was Edward Burrage and his maternal grandmother is <Unknown>.  He had a brother and eight sisters, named Charles, Hannah, Harriet, Jane, Lucy, Mary, Jane, Sarah and Elizabeth.  He was the sixth oldest of the ten children.
