James was born about July 1776 and his baptism took place on July 7th, 1776 in Cutcombe.1   James' father was Robert Coles and his mother was Elizabeth How.  He had a brother and three sisters, and also a sibling of unknown gender, named William, Frances, Mary, Joaney? and Joney.  He was the oldest of the six children.
