Sarah's father was John Thorne and her mother was Sarah Greenslade. Her paternal grandparents were Richard Thorne and Elizabeth Parkin; her maternal grandfather was William Greenslade and her maternal grandmother is Mary. She had four brothers and seven sisters, named Richard, John, Jacob, William, Elizabeth, Mary, Elizabeth, Jane, Charlotte, Eliza and Maria. She was the fifth oldest of the twelve children.
