Eliza was born about 1846 in Withypool, Somerset, England and her baptism took place on December 26th, 1847 in Withypool Parish Church.1 2   Eliza's father was John Thorne and her mother was Sarah Greenslade.  Her paternal grandparents were Richard Thorne and Elizabeth Parkin; her maternal grandfather was William Greenslade and her maternal grandmother is Mary. She had four brothers and seven sisters, named Richard, John, Jacob, William, Elizabeth, Mary, Sarah, Elizabeth, Jane, Charlotte and Maria.  She was the eleventh oldest of the twelve children.
