Susan was born about 1829 in Devon, England.1   Susan's father was William  A. Slade Howell and her mother was Betsy Pine. She had eight brothers and four sisters, named Thomas, William, John, Ansdell, Handsworth, Melvin S S, Jesse , Fortunatus, Betsy, Sally, Dinah and Mary.  She was the seventh oldest of the thirteen children.  She died in 1908.2
