Betsy was born before March 3rd, 1816 in Lympstone, Devon, England and her baptism took place on March 3rd, 1816.  Betsy's father was William  A. Slade Howell and her mother was Betsy Pine. She had eight brothers and four sisters, named Thomas, William, John, Ansdell, Handsworth, Melvin S S, Jesse , Fortunatus, Sally, Dinah, Susan and Mary.  She was the oldest of the thirteen children.
