James was born in 1756 and his baptism took place on March 21st, 1756 in Exford, Somerset, Parish Church.  James' father was Samuel Gregory and his mother was Anne Blackford.  His paternal grandparents are Richard Gregory and Mary; his maternal grandparents are James Blackford and Joan Kent. He had two brothers named Samuel and John.  He was the oldest of the three children.
