Samuel was born about 1829 in Selworthy, Somerset, England and his baptism took place on February 24th, 1829 in Selworthy Church, Somerset.1 2  Samuel's father was William Cooksley and his mother was Ann Morgan. He had five brothers and two sisters, named James, John, William, Thomas, Eli, Mary and Jane.  He was the fifth oldest of the eight children.
