Mary was born about 1818 in Selworthy, Somerset, England and her baptism took place on January 5th, 1819 in Selworthy Church, Somerset.1 2  Mary's father was William Cooksley and her mother was Ann Morgan. She had six brothers and a sister, named James, John, William, Samuel, Thomas, Eli and Jane.  She was the oldest of the eight children.
