James was born about 1821 in Selworthy, Somerset, England and his baptism took place on April 16th, 1821 in Selworthy Church, Somerset.1 2  James' father was William Cooksley and his mother was Ann Morgan. He had five brothers and two sisters, named John, William, Samuel, Thomas, Eli, Mary and Jane.  He was the second oldest of the eight children.
