Zakayah Mohamed was born in Khartoum.  Zakayah Mohamed's father was Mohamed Aref and her mother was Husna Atabani Suwar Al Dahab.  Her paternal grandfather was Eissa Hussain; her maternal grandfather was Atabani. She had six brothers named Mohamed Mohamed, AbdelHamid Mohamed, Ibrahim Mohamed, XYZ Mohamed, ZXY Mohamed and Fouad Mohamed.  She was the second oldest of the seven children.
