Carmen's father was Epifanio María Cupani and her mother was Antonia Donato.  Her paternal grandparents were Giuseppe Cupani and Carmela Di Franco; her maternal grandparents were Antonio Donato and Miguelina Formentini.  She is the fifth of six children.  She had four brothers and a sister, named Jose, Marcelino, Sebastian, Felipe and Miguelina.
