William was born in 1768.  William's father was Robert DALTON and his mother was Elizabeth KELLY.  His paternal grandparents were William (Guilielmus) DALTON and Katherine BURNISTON.  He had three brothers and four sisters, named John, Robert, Robert, Elizabeth, Margaret, Mary and Ann.  He was the second oldest of the eight children.
