John was born in 1766.  John's father was Robert DALTON and his mother was Elizabeth KELLY.  His paternal grandparents were William (Guilielmus) DALTON and Katherine BURNISTON.  He had three brothers and four sisters, named William, Robert, Robert, Elizabeth, Margaret, Mary and Ann.  He was the oldest of the eight children.
