John was born in 1862 in Northchapel, Midhurst, Sussex.  John's father was Thomas Ponter and his mother was Harriet Ponter (Mann). He had a sister named Mary Ann.  He was the younger of the two children.  He died at the age of 58 in 1920 in Whitechapel.
