John was born in 1854 in Rotherhithe, Surrey, England.  John's father was Alexander Haxton and his mother was Elizabeth Haxton (Graham).  His paternal grandparents were William Haxton and Elizabeth Haxton (Smith); his maternal grandparents were Robert Graham and Matilda Graham. He had two brothers and a sister, named William, James and Elizabeth .  He was the youngest of the four children.
