Elizabeth  was born in 1840 in Bermondsey.  Elizabeth 's father was Alexander Haxton and her mother was Elizabeth Haxton (Graham).  Her paternal grandparents were William Haxton and Elizabeth Haxton (Smith); her maternal grandparents were Robert Graham and Matilda Graham. She had three brothers named William, James and John.  She was the oldest of the four children.
