Sydney was born in 1872.  Sydney's father was Charles Samuel Hawkins and his mother was Henrietta Hawkins (Martin).  His maternal grandparents were Henry Martin and Mary Ann Martin (Sawyer). He had five brothers and a sister, named Frederick, Percival, Arthur, George , Bertram and Inez.
