James was born in 1847 in St. Mary, Westminister.  James' father was James Beazely Grimes and his mother was Caroline Grimes (Mingay).  His paternal grandparents were William Grimes and Anne Grimes (Powell); his maternal grandparents were William and Charlotte Mingay (Eves). He had two brothers and four sisters, named William, George, Caroline, Charlotte, Emma  and Elizabeth .  He was the sixth oldest of the seven children.
