Emma  was born in 1842 in Lambeth.  Emma 's father was James Beazely Grimes and her mother was Caroline Grimes (Mingay).  Her paternal grandparents were William Grimes and Anne Grimes (Powell); her maternal grandparents were William and Charlotte Mingay (Eves). She had three brothers and three sisters, named William, James, George, Caroline, Charlotte and Elizabeth .  She was the fourth oldest of the seven children.
