Caroline was born in 1839 in Lambeth.  Caroline's father was James Beazely Grimes and her mother was Caroline Grimes (Mingay).  Her paternal grandparents were William Grimes and Anne Grimes (Powell); her maternal grandparents were William and Charlotte Mingay (Eves). She had three brothers and three sisters, named William, James, George, Charlotte, Emma  and Elizabeth .  She was the second oldest of the seven children.
