Thomas was born in 1869 in Bermondsey, Surrey.  Thomas' father was Edward Collett and his mother was Mary Ann Charlotte Collett(Pearcey).  His paternal grandparents were John Collett and Frances Jane Collett (Holyman); his maternal grandparents were Richard Pearcey and Elizh Pearcey. He had three brothers and two sisters, named Joseph, James, Richard, Louise and Frances.  He was the oldest of the six children.
