Mary was born on September 8th, 1761 in Ayr and her baptism took place there on September 11th, 1761 conducted by William Dalrymple.  Mary's father was James Eaglesom/Eaglesholm/Eaglesome/Eagleshum/Eaglesham and her mother was Margaret Somerveil/Sommerveil. She had three brothers and a sister, named Robert, Alexander, John and Mary.  She was the youngest of the five children.
