William was born about 1881 in Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire.  William's father was Thomas Fraser and his mother was Margaret McKenzie.  His paternal grandparents were John Fraser and Ann Thomson; his maternal grandparents were William McKenzie and Elizabeth Stuart. He had seven sisters named Margaret, Williamina, Alice, Frances, Bella, Charlotte and Mary.  He was the third oldest of the eight children.
