2 CONT Edgar Maurice Heigho, retired railroad president and a resident of Boi
2 CONC se since 1918, was found death in bed at his home, 4?? Jefferson stree
2 CONC t, at 7:30 o'clock Saturday morning.

2 CONT A doctor summoned immediately said that Mr. Heigho had been dead about
2 CONC  two hours. Mr. Heigho would have been 50 years of age October 23 of t
2 CONC his year. He was born at Essex, England.
2 CONT  
2 CONT Since 1918 Mr. Heigho has lived in retirement in Boise. In that year h
2 CONC e suffered a stroke of paralysis which forced him to resign his positi
2 CONC on as president and general manager of the Pacific and Idaho Northern 
2 CONC Railroad company. He came to Boise then to live.
2 CONT  
2 CONT During his lifetime he was connected with independent military organiz
2 CONC ations and the Idaho national guard. He served as a captian and aide-d
2 CONC ecamp on the staff of former Governor F. R. Gooding and as colonel and
2 CONC  commissioner general on the staff of former Governor Brady. He was a 
2 CONC colonel on the staff of former Governor Haines.
2 CONT  
2 CONT He is survived by his widow, a son, Cedrie, living in Portland, two da
2 CONC ughters, Virginia, who is now in New York, and Katherine, at home.
2 CONT  
2 CONT Two sister, Mrs. W. W. Hook of Los Angeles and Mrs. S. E. Hook and his
2 CONC  brother, George W. Heigho, both of Detroit, also survive him.
2 CONT  
2 CONT Col. Heigho was president of the Pacific & Idaho Northern railroad at 
2 CONC the time it was extended from Evergreen to Meadows Valley, and was the
2 CONC  moving spirit in the establishment of the town of New Meadows. He was
2 CONC  a man of indomitable will who, once he had decided to do a thing neve
2 CONC r ceased his efforts until the end had been attained.

2 CONT He was a man of rare talents and his library contained the very best i
2 CONC n literature and art. To spend an evening in his home and have him los
2 CONC e himself in a discussion of literature was always a pleasure and the 
2 CONC writer looks back on many such occasions in which we gained a high est
2 CONC imate of his attainments.

2 CONC dgar Maurice Heigho was born October 23, 1867 in Essex, England. He ca
2 CONC me to the U. S. as a young boy. With no formal schooling beyond his pr
2 CONC e-teens, he found work as an office boy at the Detroit Free Press. At 
2 CONC age 15, Edgar landed a job with a Detroit-based railroad. 
2 CONT 
2 CONT For the next five years, he bounced around among several railways, inc
2 CONC luding the Union Pacific. Heigho became Chief Clerk for the Idaho Cent
2 CONC ral Railway in 1887, the year that company completed the first branch 
2 CONC line – “The Stub” – into Boise City [blog, Sept 13].
2 CONT 
2 CONT In 1891, Heigho found other employment. He first worked on a survey cr
2 CONC ew in central Idaho, then as a freight traffic manager for a railroad 
2 CONC based in St. Louis. He filled several positions until about 1895, when
2 CONC  he began a four-year period ranching in Wyoming’s Jackson Hole.
2 CONT 
2 CONT Heigho then returned to the railroad business, working for the Oregon 
2 CONC Short Line. In 1903, he joined the Pacific & Idaho Northern Railway as
2 CONC  an auditor. The P&IN started laying track out of Weiser in 1899 and h
2 CONC ad extended the line ninety miles north three years later. 
2 CONT 
2 CONT The company established a “New Meadows” station about two miles west o
2 CONC f the existing village of Meadows. New Meadows quickly drew business t
2 CONC o itself and left Meadows as a few scattered dwellings. Heigho rose qu
2 CONC ickly in the P&IN and, in 1909, he became its President and General Ma
2 CONC nager. For a number of years, people toyed with the notion of pushing 
2 CONC the tracks on to Lewiston, but that never happened.
2 CONT

2 CONT Besides his railway position, Heigho was President and General Manager
2 CONC  of the Central Idaho Telegraph & Telephone Company, and also for the 
2 CONC Coeur d'Or Development Company. The development company owned the New 
2 CONC Meadows town site and built a substantial depot, a bank, a school, and
2 CONC  the Hotel Heigho. Edgar served as Director of the bank in New Meadows
2 CONC  as well as one in Weiser.
2 CONT 
2 CONT Heigho also built a fine mansion for himself in New Meadows. He was de
2 CONC scribed as having been associated with “independent military organizat
2 CONC ions” for a number of years. He also had a connection with the Idaho N
2 CONC ational Guard, provided advice on military affairs to the Idaho govern
2 CONC or, and wrote on military affairs for a national audience. During Worl
2 CONC d War I, he and his wife participated in various “home front” war acti
2 CONC vities, being especially interested in Belgian relief work.

2 CONT In 1918, Edgar suffered a stroke that forced him to resign as General 
2 CONC Manager of the railroad. According to Hawley’s History, he retained th
2 CONC e presidency for several years after that. He passed away in 1926. The
2 CONC  Heigho mansion in New Meadows is on the National Register of Historic
2 CONC  Places, and the depot there is being renovated to serve as a museum.
