Alzira was born on February 18th, 1916.  Alzira's father was Antônio Pedro do Couto and her mother was Maria (Dona Cota) Álvares Maciel.  Her paternal grandparents were Leonel Braga do Couto and Bárbara Lino do Couto; her maternal grandparents were Francisco Jorge (Chico Jorge) Maciel and Bárbara. She had four brothers and a sister, named Toinzinho, Pedro, Iraci, Sinhozinho and Joana.
