Stiles was born in 1842.  Stiles' father was Thomas Alexander Porch and his mother was Jane Elizabeth Ragland Witherspoon. He had three brothers and five sisters, named Thomas, John, John, Elizabeth, Celia, Sarah, Nancy and Ella.  He was the fourth youngest of the nine children. He had five half-brothers and seven half-sisters, named Henry, William, Alexander, James, Julius, Elizabeth, Rebecca, Frances, Susan, Sarah, Pleasant and Mary.  He died at the age of 89 in 1931.
